Bay County, Florida Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigator Involved in Shooting During Physical Altercation With Suspect in Panama City

At approximately 4:47PM on Thursday, April 29, 2021, a Bay County, Florida Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigator went to the Gazebo area at the Government Center on 11th Street to make contact with a suspect in a Grand Theft case in Callaway.
 
The investigator has been looking for this suspect for a few days and developed information he was in the area of the Gazebo, near a laundromat next to the Government Center.
 
Michael Caleb Barrett, age 38, of 12th Street in Springfield was a suspect in a Grand Theft case.
 
It is believed Barrett took over $5,000 in valuables from a home in Callaway.
 
A physical altercation ensued when the investigator confronted Barrett, who resisted arrest and took the investigator’s firearm, striking him in the face with it.
 
The investigator regained his firearm and fired at Barrett, striking him.
 
Barrett is in stable condition in a local hospital. He now faces charges of Attempted Murder and Aggravated Battery.
 
The investigator is also in stable condition at a local hospital.
 
The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
 
The investigator has been placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure in these incidents.
