On Thursday, August 5, 2021 the Washington County, Florida SWAT Team (Students Working Against Tobacco) held the Second Annual GLAM event at the Washington County School Boardroom in Chipley.
Standing for ‘Girls Leadership Academy and Mentoring’ the 2020 event was held virtually, due to the Corona Pandemic, but was considered a success.
This year the SWAT team ratcheted the event up a notch, bringing in several motivational speakers, holding team building exercises and featuring a mini-makeover and headshot photos during the day-long event, as seen in the photos (below).
Cosmetologists from the Styling Station in downtown Chipley volunteered their time and resources to give the young ladies a polish, while the Florida Panhandle Technical College Digital Photography Program donated a headshot session with each participating lady.
Ranging in age from Freshmen to Seniors in high school, the day was motivating, inspirational and entertaining, with Washington County Superintendent of Schools Joe Taylor speaking to the ladies, along with local Realtor Cindy Birge, Habitat for Humanity Director Carmen Smith, Gulf Power Manager and Chipley Mayor Tracy Andrews, Chipley High School Principal Alicia Clemmons, and others.
Plans are already afoot to hold the event again next year, with the inclusion of several mini-events throughout the year, all geared toward preparing young ladies for a bright future.
