On August 21, 2021, at approximately 3:44 p.m. (CST), the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) responded to a call in reference to a physical disturbance.
The complainant stated she has been pushed down stairs by the suspect, later identified as John Wayne Cartwright II, and that he fled on foot. The suspect had two outstanding warrants, one in another county.
Upon arrival by the JCSO, deputies made contact with the complainant who stated she was in her vehicle backing up to the residence to load her four kids. As she exited the vehicle, she noticed Cartwright approaching from a wooded area.
She stated she walked up the porch stairs to get a bow and arrow she had purchased and stated that it belonged to her and he was not going to take it.
The complainant stated Cartwright then took his index finger and pushed her face hard enough to cause her to lose her balance and fall down the wet stairs, which further caused her to have lacerations on the left side of her stomach and the left side of her thigh.
The complainant is six and a half months pregnant, and is visibly showing.
She stated she got up from the ground and let Cartwright know she was calling law enforcement. The suspect then fled on foot and the complainant went inside the residence and called 911 to report the incident and describe what the suspect was wearing.
The JCSO K-9 Tracking Unit was notified and deployed. The complainant made contact with Cartwright’s mother who stated she wanted law enforcement and the complainant off of her property and that Cartwright had received a ride to Dothan.
The K-9 Tracking Unit arrived on scene and began a track near the residence, which traveled southbound for approximately two miles. The track went westward and ended on the roadway.
JCSO located an address showing that the property belonged to Cartwright and arrived to the residence. An individual residing there stated that his fiancé had just left to give Cartwright a ride. The fiancé returned to the residence and stated he had given the suspect a ride to a residence near Hardee’s.
The JCSO located Cartwright at the residence. He was taken into custody without incident and is being charged with Aggravated Battery.
Sheriff Edenfield and the JCSO would like to thank residents for their willingness to report crimes as they arise in the community, which helps make our county a safe place for all.
