According to WEAR-TV, over 5,000 people have signed a petition regarding what they say were inappropriate comments made by the Dean of West Florida High School during an assembly last Thursday.
Rachel Simmons, the Dean of West Florida High School, spoke about the dress code during the assembly, and many felt it was directed to females and how they decide to dress.
In a video sent to Channel 3, the Dean can be heard saying things such as, “you need to dress the way you want people to address you” and “if you allow them to devalue you then that’s on you.”
Many parents and students of the school have reached out to Channel 3 expressing their anger at the comments Simmons made to the Students.
One parent told Channel 3 that they have a son and a niece that attends West Florida High School.
He says that “it is wrong to tell a young woman that it’s her fault if she’s sexually assaulted for any reason, it is also wrong to tell young men that it’s ok to sexually harass or assault a woman for any reason.”
Channel 3 heard from parents and students in the area that a protest was held Monday at Washington High School, where students held up signs and wore clothing that broke the dress code.
Channel 3 has reached out to the Escambia County School District and West Florida High School for a comment but has not heard back yet.
