It’s that time of year when the Youth Gardeners at Kate Smith Elementary School begin their annual horticulture project.
Chipley Garden Club Youth Chairperson Linda Pigott was happy to kick off the year by delivering over 130 potted plants to the 1st and 3rd graders.
The children chose a plant of their own from a variety of live potted plants that had been propagated by the garden club during the past year. After they made their choices, Mrs. Pigott “schooled” the students on how to take care of the various plants emphasizing light, water, and soil.
The children were very excited to learn that they would be able to enter their plants in the 2022 Washington County Youth Fair. The youth fair is sponsored by Washington County Extension of UF/IFAS.
Mrs. Pigott stated, “This is just one of our youth gardening activities. Later in the year, we will be making terrariums and designing dried and live floral designs with other students. It’s important that children learn about nature and caring for plants.”
