Rise in Food Prices Puts Houston, Alabama County Jail Over Budget

By | October 26, 2021

Houston County, Alabama Jail inmates will have three hot meals for the next three years provided by a new vendor.

Houston County commissioners approved Monday morning one of three bids received from different vendors to supply meals for the average number of 400 inmates in the system.

Even though the county chose the lowest bid, the rise in food prices put the county over budget.

“The bids that came in were significantly more than I had budgeted,” Houston County Chief Administrator Officer, Peter Covert said. “The winning bid was about 10% higher than expected. A couple of the other bids were higher than that.”

Covert says once the contract is finalized between the county and the vendor, he will bring a budget amendment to the commission where it will vote to approve or reject.
