My name is Ashlynn (Casey) Marquez, and I recently announced my candidacy for the District 1 Washington County School Board seat.
I am a small business owner and I have been self-employed as a cosmetologist more than 21 years.
Entrepreneurship in Washington County is a family tradition for me, and my grandparents, Eddie and Jo Davis, owned the Chuck Wagon restaurant in Chipley for many years. Growing up in the service industry taught me a lot about work ethic and problem solving.
I have taken the service rules I learned into my own business as a local business owner, and I transitioned into the hair business naturally, as my grandmother Vernice Turner, mom Sonya Davis and aunt were all hairdressers.
When I wasn’t in the restaurant, I was in the salon. What I noticed is that no matter what services were provided, success is found when you follow a few simple rules: be nice to people, care about what they want, listen to their needs, and do your best to help them. I feel that those life lessons translate well into the role of public servants as well.
I’ve spent my life wanting to serve in some way, and I have a desire to be around the people of this community.
I do not have all the answers, but I love more than anything working to find those answers and creating solutions to help people.
My platform includes a respect for a parents’ fundamental right to make decisions regarding the upbringing of their children; support for educators as they undertake the daunting task of educating the next generation; ensuring secure and safe educational facilities for children and staff; ensuring transparency of curriculum and encouraging students to further their education through area colleges such as Florida Panhandle Technical College, which is currently underutilized, and Chipola College.
