On Jan. 11, 2022, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division received a report from the Department of Children and Families about a juvenile female who had just delivered a baby. JCSO Investigators, as well as the Department of Children and Families began an investigation into the circumstances of the pregnancy.
After numerous interviews, 48-year-old Michael Sorey was developed as a suspect. DNA samples from the baby were collected and sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Crime Lab to be compared to Sorey’s DNA profile. On Sept. 9, JCSO Investigators received a report from FDLE that Sorey is the father of the baby.
On Sept. 14, Investigators located Sorey and arrested him on an unrelated warrant for Grand Theft. In an interview, Sorey admitted to having sex with the juvenile mother. Sorey was arrested for Sexual Battery by a person in a Familial or Custodial Authority and placed in the Jackson County Correctional Facility. On Sept. 15, Sorey’s bond was set at $205,000 at his first appearance.
Sheriff Edenfield is proud of his investigators for their diligent work on this case. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate any type of sexual crimes against children and will aggressively investigate until justice is served.
