Tempers flared between Alabama’s Republican Representative Mike Rogers and Florida’s Representative Matt Gaetz, following the 14th failed vote to approve Kevin McCarthy as House speaker on Friday night, January 6, 2023.

Rogers had to be physically restrained and McCarthy entered the fray when Gaetz spoke about his feelings on the vote and his possible support.

Some observed that the matter be better resolved in the boxing ring, but this failed for lack of a ‘second’.

McCarthy was ultimately elected as Speaker of the House in the 15th consecutive vote, finally ridding the House of Nancy Pelosi, both historically significant occurrences.
