New College of Florida Enjoys Changes in Response to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis New Policies Regarding Education

Located on a 110-acre campus on Sarasota Bay, New College is a self-professed ‘community of bold and intellectually curious risk takers who thrive in an environment where their education is their own’.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently replaced college President Patricia Okker with Richard Corcoran and appointed a new board chair.

DeSantis also initiated the process of eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, opting instead to take a turn toward merit-based incentives, leveling the playing field for all potential students.

DeSantis slammed Florida universities, especially New College, over their diversity plans and teaching of critical race and gender theories.

Matthew Spalding, a Hillsdale College dean and DeSantis board appointee to New College, said the school needs committed leadership to the governor and Legislature‘s goals. His sentiment was echoed by others.
