A sex offender is behind bars in Washington County after failing to comply with offender registration requirements.
Investigators with the WCSO received information that Billy Alan Smith, 43, was living at a residence off Coggin Ave. in Chipley.
It was confirmed that Smith was a sex offender through FDLE but had failed to report he vacated a permanent address within 48 hours (per requirements set forth by the state of Florida). After a couple attempts, Investigators with the WCSO make contact with Smith who admits to staying at the residence on Coggin Ave.
A warrant was obtained.
WCSO, in conjunction with the US Marshall Task Force, arrested Smith on January 31st without further incident following an investigation.
Smith was transported to the Washington County Jail on charges of failing to report vacating a permeant address and failing to change or renew information on ID card within 48 hours.
Sheriff Crews continues to urge the public to inform law enforcement of any suspicious activity or persons they may encounter.
“Neither potential nor direct risks to the safety of our children will be tolerated,” states Crews. “There are laws put in place to protect citizens from further harm, and those laws will be enforced to the fullest. Compliance is simple. Individuals designated as sexual offenders need to abide by the requirements set upon them by law.”
