Start Here- Get There.
If you have passed through downtown in the last couple of days, you have probably noticed the scarecrows, as seen by the Photography Program from Florida Panhandle Technical College in a field trip to Downtown Chipley, Florida on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, to highlight the arrival of the Chipley Scarecrows, a once-yearly event.
Members of Chipley Garden Club worked for several days pulling the club’s scarecrow collection out of storage and fluffing them up before displaying them around town.
The club encourages the downtown businesses and merchants to add to the displays and decorate their businesses with Fall colors, pumpkins, corn stalks, pumpkins, and scarecrows, of course.
So, why are the scarecrows here? They always show up before the annual Scarecrow Building Contest.
This year the contest will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 9AM until 1PM at the Farmers Market Pavilion. The entry fee is only $10 per entry.
There are several categories with cash prizes, ribbons, and certificates to be awarded. Rules and entry forms are available at by calling 850-260-4049 or online at www.washingtoncountyhistoricalsociety.com.
In conjunction with Scarecrow Building Contest, Washington County Historical Society will be hosting it annual history homecoming. This family-friendly event will be packed full of free kids crafts, delicious food, drinks, craft vendors, and artists’ offerings.
The farmer’s market will have home-made jams, jellies, fresh veggies, and potted plants, and the history museum will be open for touring.
