Bonifay, Florida Municipal Drama Continues as Mayor Resigns, Police Chief is Terminated and Residents Look Toward Rodeo Season

By | September 6, 2023

Emily McCann, Mayor of Bonifay, Florida, resigned from that position on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, in a canned letter presented to the Bonifay City Council at an emergency meeting.

The letter stated, ‘I, Emily McCann, resign as mayor of the city of Bonifay, effective immediately. The constant and recent threats against the safety of my council, employees and family are too much. While it’s been a dream to support the city in this capacity, I cannot continue to put the safety of my family and myself at risk’.

Larry Cook, Vice-Mayor, then informed the Council that newly-hired Bonifay, Florida Police Chief Jimmy Macon has been terminated, after only several months.

A movement to disband the Bonifay Police Department and contract with the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement was recently floated, but was turned down by the Council in a vote.

The Northwest Florida Championship Rodeo will be in town soon, and is highly anticipated by local residents.
