On Tuesday, Sept. 19, around 2:45 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with faulty equipment traveling on Highway 71.

When the stop was made, the driver, Carl Anthony Burroughs, immediately got out of the car and placed his hands on top of the vehicle.

Deputies smelled alcohol emanating from both the vehicle and Burroughs’ person. Burroughs then told deputies that he drank several bottles of liquor just before driving.

K-9 Dutch was deployed and alerted to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle. When deputies searched the vehicle, they found one baggie of flakka, one baggie of cannabis and three empty liquor bottles.

Burroughs was also asked to take a blood alcohol test three separate times, which he refused.

Burroughs was arrested and is being charged with Driving Under the Influence and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Sheriff Edenfield will not tolerate anyone driving under the influence and endangering the citizens of Jackson County on the roads, and if you are found to be doing so, you will be arrested and face charges.
