Tropical Storm Tammy Strengthens, Approaches Southeastern Coast of United States

In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Tammy is expected to strengthen as it approaches the Lesser Antilles.

It has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour with tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 140 miles from the center of the storm.

Tammy is moving west at 17 mph.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Barbados, Dominica and Martinique and Guadeloupe.

A turn toward the west-northwest is forecast by Thursday night, followed by another turn toward the northwest Friday night or Saturday. The center of Tammy is forecast to move near or over the Leeward Islands on Friday and Saturday.

Tammy could dump three to six inches of rain, with maximum amounts of 10 inches, across portions of the northern Windward into the Leeward Islands through Saturday night.

The storm could be near hurricane intensity by the end of the weekend.

Rainfall totals of one to two inches with maximum amounts of four inches are expected for the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and into eastern Puerto Rico.
