Ruby “Joyce” Hodges died on December 25,2023 at home. She was surrounded by her family and Goldie, the ever-faithful dog.
She was active in the community. Joyce was a small business owner, running Joyce Hodges Roofing for over 25 years. She served as Vice Chairman for the Contractors Disciplinary Board in Washington County.
After Hurricane Opal, Tamco roofing company named her Best Roofing Contractor in the state of Florida. She also volunteered with Head Start.
She enjoyed working as a roofing contractor; however, her most important work was her job as Gammie. Gammie’s house was THE place to be!
Between phone calls, she would play with her grandkids and serve as their short order cook. No child ever left Gammie’s house hungry or empty handed.
Gammie loved to draw and color with her grandkids when they were little, and when they got older she taught them the card game Rummy.
She lived a simple life and that is exactly how she liked it. Gammie always thought of others first and there was never any doubt she loved her family.
She was preceded in death by her mother: Ruby Lois Downing.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years: Toby Hodges; daughter: Carlyn Hodges; stepdaughter: Toby Murray (Chris Murray); stepson: Levingston Dewitt Hodges III (Henny Hodges); brother: Jimmy Bynum; sister: Bobbie Odom; grandkids: Joseph and Kadence Faulk, Cullan, Coren and Keria Murray
Memorialization by cremation with Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida in charge of arrangements.
