Holmes County, Florida Sheriff’s Office Arrests Lois K. Merkel on February 7, 2024 for Second-Degree Murder

By | February 7, 2024
Holmes County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of Lois K. Merkel on February 7, 2024. Merkel was arrested at her home in Callaway by officers with the U.S. Marshals Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force on a Holmes County warrant for 2nd-degree murder.

The charge stems from the shooting death of Steven Hall in May 2023.

HCSO originally responded to a 911 call that reported an accidental shooting had occurred at a Bonifay hotel.

Through active investigation and forensic evidence taken from the scene, Merkel’s and Hall’s cell phones, etc., investigators were able to determine the story of an accidental shooting Merkel reported was not true.

Upon her arrest, Lois Merkel was transported to the Bay County Jail, where she currently awaits extradition to Holmes County.

Due to the tragic and sensitive nature of this case, an extensive investigation was imperative. Forensic evidence is crucial, and takes significant time to process.

HCSO prioritizes accuracy and integrity with each case to ensure a thorough investigation and provide the best chance for justice to victims and their loved ones.

Sheriff Tate extends his appreciation to the agencies comprising the U.S. Marshals Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force for their invaluable assistance in successfully apprehending Merkel.
