The House voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Tuesday evening over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Three Republicans voted with all of the Democrats against impeachment. The final tally was 214-213.
“I think he has brought more damage to the country than any cabinet secretary that has even been,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Mayorkas was impeached on two counts, “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and “breach of public trust.”
“Secretary Mayorkas has sat at the helm of a historic, unconstitutional catch and release scheme,” said Rep. John Rose (R-Tenn.).
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden pushed the House to take up a Senate-passed aid package that would give $95 billion to Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine.
“So, I call on the speaker to let the full House speak his mind and not allow a minority of most extreme voices in the House to block this bill even from being voted on,” Biden said.
Biden also responded to comments from former president Donald Trump who said he would not defend NATO allies from a Russian attack if they fail to pay full dues to the military alliance.
“For God’s sake, it’s dumb, shameful. It’s dangerous, it’s un-American,” Biden added.
The Senate is expected to hold the impeachment trial of Mayorkas at the end of the month.
