A school district in Florida has reported its sixth case of measles, marking an outbreak.
The infected student was from Manatee Bay Elementary School in Weston.
“We expect to receive further guidance from the Florida Department of Health tomorrow and will continue to keep the school and its families updated with the latest information,” Broward County Public Schools chief communications and legislative affairs officer John Sullivan said.
The district is working closely with health officials, taking preventive measures such as deep cleaning and filter replacement.
“The District is maintaining close coordination with the Health Department to address this ongoing situation,” Sullivan said.
“Over the weekend, the District took further preventive measures by conducting a deep cleaning of the school premises and replacing its air filters,” he added.
The source of infection is unknown. Measles cases have been increasing in the U.S. and U.K., with a significant rise in global measles deaths last year.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air, with symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose, and rash.
