A Washington County juvenile has charges pending after a report of a gun on a school bus came in yesterday afternoon.

At approximately 3 p.m. on May 8th, WCSO telecommunications center received a call in reference to a student having a gun on a school bus.

An elementary school student reported to the bus driver that one of the big kids on the bus had a gun. The driver of the bus remained calm and immediately contacted his supervisor to inform the authorities of the situation.

The driver focused and protected the children by informing them the bus was stopping due to a mechanical issue to stall for law enforcement to arrive.

WCSO deputies along with the Chipley Police Department responded to the scene and immediately boarded the bus, identified the suspect and detained the high school student.

The weapon was located inside of the suspect’s backpack along with other personal items of the students. It was wrapped in a black T-shirt with the muzzle being the only part not concealed. After further investigation it was deemed the weapon was a toy gun that had been altered to resemble a real firearm.

The high school student was arrested and charged with exhibiting a weapon on school property and disturbing the peace.
