On June 18, 2024, Holmes County Communications received a report concerning a silver Chevrolet Impala with Illinois license plates parked at the rest area in Ponce de Leon (PDL), Florida.

The caller indicated that the vehicle might contain a kidnapping victim and a suspect wanted for homicide.

Deputies responded promptly to the rest area and observed the silver Impala leaving the premises. They conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

The driver was identified as David Eugene Grant, who was immediately detained. A check of Grant’s information revealed that his driver’s license was suspended.

Additionally, Grant had an active warrant from Portland, Oregon, for attempted murder and other charges.

The passenger, identified as Aiyana Stokes, informed the deputies that she was not kidnapped and was traveling with Grant of her own free will.

Based on the circumstances, the deputies conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. They discovered marijuana, a shotgun, and a pistol in the trunk.

As a result of these findings, both Grant and Stokes were arrested. David Eugene Grant faces charges of driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and outstanding warrants from Oregon, including attempted murder.

Aiyana Stokes was charged with possession of marijuana, and allowing an unauthorized person to drive.
