National Hurricane Center Issues Advisory Forecast Update on Gulf Storm Weather

By | September 24, 2024

Here’s a Forecast Update on #PTC9. Not too many changes forecast wise, but we’re now in the watch phase of this event and we’re going to dive deeper into the potential impacts across our forecast area.

Surge: Storm surge will be a very high concern with PTC9 given the huge vulnerability of the Apalachee Bay to storm surge, and the large/strong potential wind field of this system as it moves into the Gulf.

If local officials order evacuations, TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY. 10-15ft of surge is NOT survivable.

Wind: With a major hurricane possible across the the Florida Big Bend on Thursday, here is the wind potential for PTC9. This graphic shows what type of winds you should be preparing for. It accounts for uncertainties in track/intensity. There is a potential for numerous power outages and structural damages, especially along the coast. Power outages could last upwards of a week or longer in some of the heavier impacted locations.

Flooding Rain: While PTC9 will be moving quicker than most systems when it makes landfall, we’re still expecting heavy rain across much of the forecast area, especially along and near the center. While uncertainty still remains fairly high, folks should be prepared for the possibility of 10 inches of rain in some areas.

These amounts could bring widespread flooding to locations and we’re likely to see some riverine flooding across the area depending on where the heavier amounts fall.

Tornadoes: A few tornadoes are possible, mostly east of the center.
