Washington County, Florida County Commission Declare State of Local Emergency on September 24, 2024, in Advance of Helene

Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Helene with sustained winds of 45 mph. Additional strengthening is forecast and Helene is expected to become a hurricane on Wednesday as it enters the gulf waters progressing rapidly toward the Florida Gulf Coastline with projected landfall in the Big Bend Region.

Please remain vigilant in monitoring the storm through reputable websites including the National Hurricane Center, the National Weather Service, the Florida Division of Emergency Management, or local television news outlets as forecast changes are likely.

The Board of County Commissioners declared a Local State of Emergency, effective at 7AM on 9/24/24.

Washington County Schools will be closed on Thursday, 9/26/24 but will re-open on Friday, 9/27/24.

Public Works personnel have surveyed and recorded pre-storm road conditions throughout the day.

Sand and bags will be available for residents to fill with their own shovels at the following locations Tuesday and Wednesday of this week from 10AM – 6PM at the following locations:

Orange Hill VFD 1927 Orange Hill Rd. Chipley, FL

Sunny Hills VFD 3868 Gables Blvd. Chipley, FL

Vernon VFD 3560 Roche Ave. Vernon, FL
