On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Katelyn Sutton was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 years of probation after pleading guilty to Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child and Aggravated Child Abuse.

On April 5, 2022, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputies responded to a call in reference to a small child not breathing. When deputies arrived on scene, they found the child unresponsive and performed CPR. The child was transported to the hospital, but later died.

Deputies noticed that the child had injuries to its body and requested the JCSO Criminal Investigations Division. Investigators collected evidence and conducted interviews at the scene. Additionally, an investigator traveled to Jackson Hospital and noticed the child had injuries consistent with child abuse and/or neglect.

After an extensive investigation by the JCSO, probable cause was found to arrest the child’s stepmother, Katelyn Sutton.

On April 8, 2022, the JCSO, along with members of the United States Marshal’s Service Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force, took Sutton into custody.

“I am proud of the work done by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division in bringing Sutton to justice,” Sheriff Edenfield said. “We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the families of the child and of Katelyn Sutton.”
