What Was the Origin or Purpose for ‘Halloween’?

There are strong indications that Halloween may have origins in the ancient Irish pagan festival ‘Samhain’, which celebrated the end of summer with feasting, bonfires, sacrificial offerings and homage to the dead. The word “Halloween” means “hallowed evening” or “holy evening” and dates back to 1745.
