This past week Active Shooter Training was a top priority for Washignton County educators and Law Enforcement personnel – and that should be important to all of us.

However, equally needed and important is enforcing the idea in our students that they need to follow instructions given by those in charge at the time of the incident.

As parents we have all been known to give our children instructions on what they are to do and/or not to do in all situations.

One of those directions usually centers on taking care of their belongings.

Today’s young people carry more items with them than other generations ever did and they have been warned to not lose those items – or face dire consequences.

However when they are directed to thrown down anything in their hands when exiting a building in an active shooter situation, they need to do so – and quickly.

Law enforcement officers may mistake a cell phone for a gun.

Tell your children they are more important than a cell phone.

Remember that everyone’s chief objective is to keep our young people safe in these situations.
