On Monday evening, March 2, 2020, City of Vernon, Florida City Council President Joey Brock presented Vernon High School Principal Brian Riviere with a $1,000 check to help support the VHS Basketball team’s trip to Lakeland, Florida in their quest for the state championship.

‘We wanted to make sure that the girls were supported just as much as the boys’, said Brock at the presentation, ‘so $500 of this is for the basketball team and $500 is for the expenses incurred by the cheerleaders as they make the trip with the team’.

Also at the meeting was Martha Compton, Director of Florida Panhandle Technical College in Chipley, who addressed the Council about the cooperative relationship of the college with the city.

Recently the Vernon Garden Club had petitioned FPTC to aid in the construction of a gazebo on the city square at the foot of the bridge spanning Holmes Creek, a project that the FPTC Carpentry Program heartily embraced.

‘There were a few stumbling blocks in the planning for this project’, said Compton, ‘but we are working on a solution with the Washington County Building Department and we look forward to a speedy solution so we can move forward in contributing to the beauty of Vernon with this building’, finished Compton.

The Vernon City Council meets on the first and third Mondays each month at 5:30 in City Hall, located in the former Vernon High School building at 2808 Yellow Jacket Drive.
