“Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the health care heroes in Florida’s hospitals have tirelessly served their patients and communities with courage, compassion and conviction. As the virus began to spread through our state, our hospitals voluntarily agreed to postpone non-emergent elective procedures so that our health care workforce would have the personal protective equipment needed to safely care for patients with COVID-19.

With data showing that evidence-based strategies, including social distancing, are reducing COVID-19 hospitalizations and mortality, Governor DeSantis has announced hospitals and other health care providers statewide may resume elective procedures on May 4.

Florida’s hospitals are committed first and foremost to ensuring the safety and well-being of our patients, employees and communities. This has been, and will continue to be, our top priority. We expect that individual hospitals will make decisions about when to resume specific procedures, and to what extent, based on community data and facility capacity. This evaluation will include local infection rates and testing and bed availability.

Patients are strongly encouraged to pay close attention to announcements from their local hospitals on visitation policies, access restrictions, ‘dos and don’ts,’ and how to get needed care safely. If you need medical attention, do not delay seeking care from your local health care provider. Florida’s hospitals are safe, ready and equipped to care for all Floridians.”
