Building Demolition Accident in Downtown Chipley, Florida Results in Death, Critical Injuries on Monday, January 4, 2021

According to the Chipley, Florida Police Department, on Monday, January 4, 2021, at approximately 4:10PM, the Washington County, Florida Dispatch Center received a 911 call regarding persons trapped under a possible collapsed roof located the corner of Jackson Avenue and Main Street in downtown Chipley, Florida.

First responders from the Chipley Fire and Police Departments, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington County EMS arrived on scene and discovered that demolition had been taking place in commercial buildings at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hwy 90 (Jackson Avenue) and Hwy 77 (Main Street).

During this time the roof over which construction personnel were present had collapsed, trapping 3 workers under the rubble.

First responders were able to free all the workers from the collapse, and two of these persons had sustained injuries due to the incident and were considered to be serious in nature, while one worker was deceased at the time of recovery.

Names are not yet being released, until notification of the next of kin can be made.
