Text-to-Image Artwork Created with Artificial Intelligence Prompts Ethical Discussion at Florida Panhandle Technical College in Chipley

Anyone can utilize Artificial Intelligence to make art, and there are many platforms available today that let you create AI images on Android, iOS, and PC.

The Digital Photography Technology Program at Florida Panhandle Technical College in Chipley, Florida recently started working with AI technology, much to the delight and surprise of students (see attached food images).

Text prompts, used in text-to-image generation, relate to the artificial intelligence engine the parameters of the model you are trying to create, which might be human or humanoid, or an inanimate object, although that may not stay inanimate for long of you choose to animate it.

The benefits of utilizing this type of text-to-image software are the ability to create unique artwork and an opportunity for artistic growth.

A major advantage of using AI generators to create your own designs is that they are usually free to use.

If nothing else, you don’t have to depend on expensive and time-consuming professionals to get the job done, and leveling the artistic playing field is a significant advantage.

However, some believe that creating art solely with AI is unethical and immoral, especially without informing or compensating the initial artist.

Many believe that eventually, AI will be prohibited, so it’s probably important to learn more about this technology and use AI art as ethically as is achievable.

Legal actions are already being implemented, with artists claiming damages from the technology, because some believe that the generated images are simply pieces and parts of existing work which resides online, which would, arguably, be plagiarism or copyright infringement.

Much as sampling was to music development over the past 20 years, AI will also be tested until all parties can come to an agreement about its use and applications, as well as the responsibility of those using the technology.

One benefit is that AI art generation can take classic images and breathe new life into them by starting with a photograph of a person, place or thing and simply make changes to it, based on input of text prompts.

With this software, you can request artwork inspired by iconic artists such as Van Gogh or Picasso, and you will receive varied and unique results.

ChatGPT, MidJourney, DALL-E and other open ai programs allow a huge advantage to creative artists, making possible a creative process in minutes which would have taken days, weeks or months in the past.

We will be exploring some of these issues over time, displaying the results of some of the research done by FPTC students, along with discussions of the relative ethical issues.
