Washington County, Florida Sheriff’s Office Shoots and Kills Brian James Propes During Warrant for Sexual Exploitation of Minor

On April 27, 2024 at 7:09 a.m., deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Salem Drive, in the Sunny Hills community.

Deputies were attempting to execute an out of county arrest warrant on 42-year-old Brian James Propes, for sexual exploitation of a minor, possess or intentionally view sexual performance by a child, 20 counts, $200,000 bond.

Deputies made contact with a family member and were advised that Propes was in a bedroom in the rear of the home.

Family members led deputies to the rear bedroom, where Propes was located. Deputies then made contact with Propes and advised him there was a warrant for his arrest and attempted to take him into custody. Propes began to fight with deputies and produced a firearm.

During the altercation, Propes pointed the firearm at the deputies, deputies then engaged the suspect, shots were fired and the suspect was shot.

Washington County EMS was dispatched to the scene. Deputies immediately rendered aid to Mr. Propes who later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

As protocol in any law enforcement involved shooting, deputies have been placed on administrative leave.
