We’ve got another cold night in store tonight with another hard freeze for southeast Alabama, parts of southwest Georgia, and the inland Florida Panhandle (outlined in dark blue). There is a lot more uncertainty in lows tonight than normal, especially in the Florida Big Bend (yellow outlined area). Read below for more in-depth details. Regardless, protect the 4 Ps tonight, especially in the hard freeze area — People, Pets, Pipes, Plants.
Tonight, there will be some clouds that try to move into the Florida Big Bend from the east and southeast. Clouds help prevent the temperatures from falling overnight, acting like a blanket. So, if the there are more clouds, temperatures may be warmer than forecast here. If there are no clouds, then temperatures could be colder than forecast in the yellow-outlined area. The most-likely range (or for the statistics-savvy folks out there, the interquartile range) has a spread of 6 to 10 degrees in the Florida Big Bend and neighboring Georgia communities. This means that within the most likely set of guidance, we could have anything from a hard freeze to no freeze as the most likely outcomes. Yes, it will be cold, but how cold is the question.
While we try to give a number of what’s most likely going to happen, nights like these are particularly challenging when there is such a large spread in the guidance and possible impacts. When in doubt, we still urge people to take precautionary actions for the potential of impacts.
