John Alan Barnes, 56 of Cottondale, Florida Passes on December 30, 2025

Posted on January 7, 2026

John Alan Barnes, age 56, of Cottondale, Florida, passed away on December 30, 2025.

Born August 21, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois, John is survived by his father Jimmy Barnes, mother Cynthia (James Thomas) Cooley; his sisters, Tammy (the late Daniel) Boblink and Kerri (Ed) Barnes; his brothers, David Barnes, Bill (Lynne) Barnes, and Tony (Shannon) Barnes; and many nieces and nephews.

John was extremely intelligent and could fix just about anything. He took great pride in maintaining the property, including keeping perfectly straight lines on the lawn. He was known for his sneaky sense of humor and sharp wit.

His greatest love was animals, which he often preferred over people. He once worked at Balmoral Park caring for horses and, in later years, devoted himself to caring for the family pets as well as neighborhood animals in Cottondale, often buying treats for them with his own money. It was well known that John made sure the dogs were fed before he ate.

Visitation will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2026, at the Chapel of James & Lipford Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 4:30 p.m. at the Chapel of James & Lipford Funeral Home. Burial will be private.
