Middle East Ceasefire in Peril as Israeli Strikes on Lebanon Kill Hundreds and Iran Shuts Strait of Hormuz

Posted on April 9, 2026

Less than 48 hours after the United States and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire to halt more than a month of intense fighting, the fragile truce appeared on the brink of collapse Thursday, April 9, 2026. Israel launched its deadliest strikes yet on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, killing at least 200-250 people according to Lebanese authorities, while Iran responded by closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, choking off vital oil shipments.

The U.S.-Iran deal, reached Tuesday night after President Donald Trump’s stark ultimatum threatening to “destroy Iran’s whole civilization,” included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and direct talks in Islamabad this weekend. Both sides initially claimed victory, but Israel insisted the agreement did not cover its separate campaign against Hezbollah. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned strikes would continue, while Iran called the Lebanese attacks a “grave violation.” Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel in retaliation.

The White House declared Iran’s closure of the strait “completely unacceptable” and demanded immediate reopening. Trump, speaking after celebrating the rescue of two U.S. airmen shot down over Iran, warned of “bigger and better” strikes if no “real agreement” is reached. Global oil markets jittered amid fears of renewed escalation. World leaders urged restraint as the region teetered on the edge of wider war.
