Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann Pleads Guilty to Eight Murders, Ending Decade-Long Case

Posted on April 9, 2026

In a stunning courtroom turn, Rex Heuermann, the 62-year-old Long Island architect long suspected in the Gilgo Beach serial killings, pleaded guilty Wednesday to seven counts of murder and admitted responsibility for an eighth victim, bringing swift closure to a case that haunted families and baffled investigators for over a decade.

Heuermann entered guilty pleas to three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder in Suffolk County Court. He also acknowledged killing Karen Vergata, whose remains were among those discovered along a secluded stretch of Ocean Parkway in 2010-2011. The pleas effectively guarantee he will spend the rest of his life behind bars without parole.

Prosecutors described Heuermann as responsible for a 17-year killing spree targeting women whose bodies were dumped near Gilgo Beach. Victims’ families, some present in court, expressed relief mixed with grief as the architect—arrested in 2023—finally admitted his crimes. His ex-wife and attorneys cited his decision to plead guilty as a turning point, sparing a lengthy trial.

The Gilgo Beach case drew national attention for its brutality and the years it took DNA and other evidence to link Heuermann to the crimes. Authorities said additional victims may still be identified. The surprise guilty plea Wednesday marked the dramatic end to one of New York’s most notorious unsolved serial murder investigations.
