NASA’s Artemis II Crew Completes Successful Splashdown, Captivating Nationwide Audiences

Posted on April 11, 2026

NASA’s Artemis II mission concluded Saturday with a dramatic splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, drawing millions of viewers across the United States who tuned in live to witness the Orion spacecraft’s fiery re-entry and parachute-assisted landing.

The four-member crew—commanded by NASA astronaut Victor Glover—returned safely after a 10-day journey that included a lunar flyby, marking the first crewed Artemis flight and the first time humans have traveled beyond low-Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. Recovery teams aboard the USS Hornet swiftly retrieved the capsule and astronauts, all reported in excellent health.

President Trump congratulated the team via social media, calling the mission “a tremendous win for American innovation.” Schools across the country held viewing parties, and social media exploded with footage of the glowing capsule streaking through the atmosphere.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson hailed the success as a critical step toward landing astronauts on the Moon under the Artemis program. “Today we proved once again that when America reaches for the stars, we get there together,” he said.

The splashdown capped weeks of flawless mission operations and renewed public excitement for space exploration. Artemis III, which will attempt the first lunar landing in decades, is scheduled for 2027. Families and educators described the event as inspirational for a new generation of scientists and engineers.
