Florida Department of Transportation Advises No Traffic-Related Impact This Week on State Road 77 Construction Areas

Posted on April 27, 2026

There will be no traffic related impacts this week on the State Road 77 project. Drivers are reminded to pay attention to the reduced speed limit when traveling through the construction area to watch for construction equipment entering and leaving the roadway, and to use caution when driving through the work zone. Speeding fines double when workers are present.

FDOT construction projects are designed and carried out in compliance with all state and federal environmental regulations. For the S.R. 77 Widening Project, that includes measures to protect the Florida black bear and its natural habitat. From early environmental studies to construction practices in the field, every step is taken to ensure we build responsibly alongside the environment.

The Florida black bear is the largest land mammal in the state, with males weighing up to 500 pounds. Despite their size, they’re excellent climbers and strong swimmers. Bears play an important role in the ecosystem too, they help disperse seeds and maintain healthy habitats as they forage.

You’re most likely to find them in forested areas across North and Central Florida, and while they typically avoid people, protecting their habitat is key to keeping both wildlife and communities safe.

Building better roads also means protecting what makes Florida unique, and that includes the wildlife that calls it home.

PROJECT DETAILS

Construction is underway on a $56 million project to widen 3.5 miles of S.R. 77 from Rogers Road to Cane Mill Road in Wausau. The project will expand the roadway from two to four lanes to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance mobility.

Additional improvements include:

• New sidewalks and bike lanes

• Reconstructed intersections for better traffic flow

• New bridges at Reedy Creek and Finch Circle

• Stormwater upgrades, including five retention ponds

• Updated traffic signals and intelligent transportation systems (ITS)

The project is scheduled for completion by early 2028.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

During construction, drivers will periodically encounter temporary lane closures. These lane closures may occur during either day or nighttime hours. At least one travel lane will remain open at all times.

The speed limit through the work zone is 45 mph.

All construction activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
