U.S. ‘Project Freedom’ Escalates Tensions in Strait of Hormuz as Iran Fires on Vessels

Posted on May 4, 2026

U.S. forces launched “Project Freedom” on May 4, 2026, guiding the first merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz under naval escort after President Donald Trump declared the mission would free dozens of stranded vessels and their 20,000 crew members.

Iran immediately condemned the operation as a ceasefire violation, claiming its forces struck a U.S. Navy vessel and fired missiles and drones at a UAE tanker and other ships in the waterway. Washington denied any warship was hit but confirmed two American-flagged vessels had safely transited under destroyer protection.

Oil prices jumped as global markets reacted to the renewed risk in the chokepoint that carries one-fifth of the world’s oil. Trump described the escort mission as a “humanitarian gesture” to protect neutral shipping, while Iranian officials warned that any armed interference would trigger a forceful response. Analysts say the move tests a delicate ceasefire negotiated weeks ago, even as Trump has rejected Iran’s latest peace overtures.

The escalation comes amid broader war fatigue. Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute told Democracy Now that the administration appears “still looking for a silver bullet” rather than committing to serious negotiations. Civilian shipping firms reported confusion and delays, while European and Asian allies urged restraint. In Tehran, ordinary citizens expressed fears that the regime, feeling emboldened by the conflict, could impose harsher domestic repression.

Critics at home and abroad accuse the White House of risking a wider conflict that has already driven gas prices to $4.45 per gallon in the U.S. Protests erupted in several Gulf capitals. As U.S. destroyers patrolled the strait, diplomats in multiple capitals scrambled to prevent the fragile truce from collapsing.
