A Georgia man is behind bars after police say he attempted to force a woman into her vehicle in the parking lot of the Southside Walmart on South Oates Street.

According to the Dothan Police Department, officers were called May 1 to the Walmart in the 3300 block of South Oates Street for a reported assault.

Investigators said the victim noticed a man following her as she walked to her vehicle. When she reached the vehicle, the suspect allegedly tried to force her inside.

Police said the victim called for help, and a bystander stepped in to assist. The suspect then fled on foot.

The suspect was identified as Traveyon De’Vante Wilcox, 40, of Jakin. Officers arriving on scene quickly located Wilcox, but police said he attempted to run from officers before being captured.

Wilcox was charged with first-degree attempted kidnapping, first-degree attempted theft of property, third-degree assault, obstruction of government operations, resisting arrest and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

He was booked into the Houston County Jail and is being held without bond.

The Dothan Police Department also praised the bystander who helped the victim during the incident, calling the person’s actions quick and brave.
