One of Our Favorite Recipes- Mom’s Best Ever Brownies

Posted on May 14, 2026

Made with simple ingredients, these fluffy, cake-like brownies melt in your mouth. They’re similar to a Texas sheet cake. So, not a traditional fudge-like brownie, but equally delicious. Buttermilk helps to keep them super moist. The fudgy chocolate icing on top is wonderful. Have a glass of milk handy to wash a slice down.

Ingredients

  • BROWNIE MIXTURE
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts or pecans, divided
  • BROWNIE ICING
  • 1 stick butter
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 – 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a baking pan by greasing and flouring a 9x13x2 inch pan (or spray the pan with non-stick spray).

Step 2

Combine 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of boiling water, and 4 Tbsp cocoa in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil.

Step 3

Mix 2 cups sugar, 2 cups flour, and salt together.

Step 4

Add hot butter mixture to the flour mixture.

Step 5

Dissolve 1/2 cup buttermilk and 1 tsp baking soda. Add 2 eggs.

Step 6

Add the buttermilk mixture to the chocolate mixture and mix well.

Step 7

Mix in 1 cup of chopped nuts.

Step 8

Pour into the prepared 9×13 baking dish.

Step 9

Bake for 30 – 35 minutes.

When the cake is done, start to prepare the icing. Prepare the icing by melting butter, milk, and cocoa in a small saucepan. Once combined, whisk in powdered sugar.

Step 11

Remove from heat and add vanilla extract.

Step 12

Spread icing over the brownies and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of chopped nuts. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
