It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kathryn Worrell Henders, who left us on March 15, 2025, at the age of 90. Kathryn was a cherished member of our community, beloved by family and friends alike.
Born on June 2, 1934, in Brierfield, Alabama, Kathryn was an exceptional student, even being double promoted in school enabling her to graduate at the age of 16. She attended Livingston State Teachers’ College (now University of West Alabama) and again excelled in the Teacher Education curriculum, graduating 3 years later. It was there that she met a returning soldier and LU athlete named Walter “Pistol” Henders who would become her husband for 41 years.
Moving with Walter’s coaching career, she started teaching in Live Oak, FL, where they welcomed their 2 girls, Kay and Jo. They continued their journey together, enjoying a decade in Linden, AL, making many close friends and experiencing some exciting times. Kathryn was recognized there as a talented elementary school teacher loved by students and faculty alike. The family moved to Chipley, FL in 1970 and that became their permanent home. Through her love for teaching and reading, Kathryn taught many 2nd grade students to enjoy school and be successful. Though a naturally shy person, she came to life in a classroom engaging every student to the best of her abilities. All during this time, Kathryn was a devoted wife and mother who supported her family in quiet ways. In addition, Kathryn became involved in her community, playing bridge, visiting and traveling with friends, supporting the Friends of the Library, and regularly attending the First Methodist Church. As her family grew, she particularly enjoyed visiting, traveling with, and talking about sports and books with her beloved grandchildren, Marlie and Whit.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband Walter Smith Henders, eldest daughter Kay Frances Henders, sister Joann Worrell Pickel (Roy) and parents John Percy Worrell and Frances Farrington Worrell. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Jo Henders Joseph (Joe) of Hoover, AL, her grandchildren, Marlie Kathryn Joseph of Atlanta, GA, and John Whitacre Joseph (Kaitie) of Homewood, AL, and a brother Mike Worrell (Judy).
A celebration of Kathryn’s life will be held on March 21, 2025, at First Methodist Church of Chipley, with a visitation starting at 10AM followed by a service at 11. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or First Methodist Church of Chipley, Florida.
