National Hurricane Center Advises 20% Chance of Development in Gulf of America Westward and Southward

Posted on July 17, 2026

The NHC is maintaining a 20% chance of development in the Gulf and expanded the potential area of development westward and southward.

There is an upper-level low currently southwest of Tampa causing shower activity in that area.

Currently this is a considerable amount of dry air over the peninsula of Florida, eastern Gulf and the southern Gulf.

The wind shear in the Gulf is currently light which should allow convection to build. This would benefit potential development.
