With the 2026 midterm elections less than four months away, President Donald Trump’s aggressive campaigning and administration actions on voting rules have intensified partisan battles over election integrity.
Trump has already held rallies for more than a dozen candidates in competitive races, outpacing his 2018 midterm activity at this stage.
Republicans have pursued mid-decade redistricting in states like Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri, creating additional GOP-leaning districts. Democrats have responded with their own map changes in California and elsewhere.
The Supreme Court’s earlier weakening of Voting Rights Act provisions accelerated these efforts.
Controversy has also erupted over voting access and administration. In New Jersey, Governor Mikie Sherrill revealed a computer error that improperly registered about 6,600 non-citizens to vote between 2023 and 2024 after they applied for driver’s licenses; fewer than 400 cast ballots, with no clear evidence of outcome-changing impact.
Trump has pushed executive actions on mail-in voting restrictions and citizenship verification lists, many of which face legal challenges from states and advocacy groups. Critics accuse the administration of undermining confidence in elections, while supporters say the measures protect against fraud.
Federal investigations into past elections and voter registration groups have added fuel to accusations of selective enforcement.
Trump-backed candidates have succeeded in several primaries, including 2020 election skeptics in Arizona. Democrats warn of potential House losses and vow oversight if they gain power.
The combination of redistricting, voting policy fights, and presidential involvement has made the midterms one of the most polarized contests in recent cycles.
