Something you don’t see that often that I believe is a necessity.
Jiu Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts for controlling and neutralizing an opponent, but it’s important to remember that real-world self-defense doesn’t happen in a vacuum.
One of the unfortunate trends in modern Jiu Jitsu is that it is often taught with little or no understanding of striking. This creates a gap in training because striking fundamentally changes distance, timing, positioning, and decision-making.
Understanding striking isn’t about encouraging people to fight, it’s about learning to manage distance, recognize danger, safely close the gap, and apply Jiu Jitsu under realistic conditions. Without at least a basic understanding of striking, it’s difficult to fully appreciate why many Jiu Jitsu techniques work, when they work, and when they become risky.
A well rounded Jiu Jitsu practitioner should possess at least a rudimentary understanding of how to throw and defend basic strikes. That knowledge improves distance management, situational awareness, and the ability to apply grappling effectively when strikes are present.
At PRAXXIS JIU JITSU, we believe in teaching practical, contextual self-defense. Our goal is to help students develop sound grappling skills while also understanding the realities of striking so they can become more complete martial artists and better prepared to protect themselves and those they love.
We all grow stronger together.
