On Wednesday, April 2, 2025 Chipley Garden Club members were treated to a lesson on microgreens by Tim Long of Sunny Hills Microgreens. Tim brought along some of his freshly grown produce and began by explaining the difference between sprouts and microgreens.
Microgreens are very young, edible plants which are harvested just after the first true leaves develop – tiny in size but packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They can be used in salads, sandwiches, as garnishes due to their bright colors, or make a tasty snack. Members enjoyed a “taste” of several varieties at the end of the program.
Club President Gweneth Collins began conducting the business portion by welcoming several new members and congratulating Kristin Martin on being awarded the 2025 Washington County Chamber of Commerce Spirit of the Community Award.
Updates were given on committee projects. Stacy & Mike Hanson, Veterans Affairs Co-Chair, stated our Blue Star Marker will be renovated on Thursday, solar lights added, and a rededication ceremony will be scheduled for the fall. Linda Pigott, Downtown Pots Chair, remarked the roses are gorgeous – the snow positively affected them! Zinnias have been planted in the Sundial Garden by Committee Chair Cheryl McCall. Community Outreach Co-Chair Diane Webb presented a $250 check to the Council on Aging, and Wildflower Chair Glenda Wilson introduced Wild Columbine aka Aquilega Canadensis, a shade perennial. She also mentioned solar lights have been added to the Falling Waters Butterfly Garden in hopes of deterring the deer. The April Yard of the Month was awarded to Ruth Johnson at 912 Haywood Drive by YOM Chair Dorothy Odom.
In other business, nominations were made and accepted for new officers to be installed at the May meeting. Plans were made to participate in Fresh Fest, National Garden Week, and FFGC District II Spring Meeting, a workday at the Col. Chipley Monument on Wednesday, April 9th, and Dania Barnes displayed the Memorial Tree Plaque which will be mounted at the museum.
The next meeting of Chipley Garden Club will be Wednesday, May 7th at 10:30 AM at the Washington County Ag Center East Classroom. The program will include a mobile butterfly house! If you would like further information on club activities, please contact Gweneth Collins at 850-260-4049.
