James L. Ruschmeier, age 86, of Chipley, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on May 1, 2025, at Sacred Heart Bay Medical Center in Panama City, Florida.
James was born on July 28, 1938, in Evansville, Indiana, to Charles and Frances Ruschmeier. He attended Mount Carmel High School in Southern Illinois and went on to serve proudly in the United States Navy for 20 years. He retired in 1978 at Whiting Field in Milton, Florida.
In 1984, James settled in Washington County, where he became a well-known and respected member of the community. Over the years, he made many lasting friendships through his work with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Ebro Greyhound Dog Track, and Mecco. James loved the outdoors and treasured time spent with family and friends. His favorite pastime was fishing—especially when shared with his best friend, Lane Kinney.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Frances Ruschmeier, and his beloved wife, Virginia Ruschmeier.
He is survived by his twin brother, Jack Ruschmeier (wife Kate), and his sister, Bonnie Engle (husband Bob); his children: Ricky Ruschmeier (Debra), Steve Ruschmeier (Kim), David Ruschmeier (Angela), Kay Ruschmeier, Michael Ruschmeier, Nikolas Ruschmeier, and Cameron Ruschmeier; numerous stepchildren; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his best friend, Lane Kinney, who was like a brother and a beloved member of the family. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Lane for his long-standing friendship and loyalty—you are family to us just as you were to him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Grace and Glory Worship Center in Chipley, Florida, with Pastor Debbie Williams officiating. Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida, directing.
