Today, we pause to remember a fallen warrior, a dear friend, and a Marine who gave everything for his brothers and his country.
Sgt. Joshua R. Ashley, of Rancho Cucamonga, California, was a Marine Corps Military Working Dog Handler assigned to the 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion. On July 19, 2012, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Josh made the ultimate sacrifice while clearing a route with his K9 partner, Sirius. He was 23 years old.
We had the honor of serving alongside him, watching firsthand his unmatched work ethic, his fierce loyalty, and the heart he poured into every mission. Josh wasn’t just a warrior; he was a protector, a leader, and a man whose presence made those around him better.
After his passing, Sirius survived the blast and was later retired and adopted by Josh’s mother, Tammie, continuing the bond they forged in battle. The military working dog kennels at Camp Lejeune now bear Josh’s name, a lasting tribute to a life lived with purpose and a sacrifice that will never be forgotten.
Josh was posthumously promoted to Sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star with Valor, Purple Heart, and numerous other commendations. But beyond the medals, it’s the legacy he left in our hearts that we carry forward.
To Josh, your memory lives on in every step we take afield, every veteran we support, and every life we touch through FOYA. You are not forgotten. You never will be.
