National Weather Service Issues Heat Advisory, Excessive Rain Warning

Posted on August 1, 2025

Dangerous heat will continue through into Saturday.  A Heat Advisory for heat indices/apparent temperatures of 108-112F is in effect today for portions of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend along with portions of southwest Georgia from Noon to 7PM ET / 11AM to 6PM CT. A heat advisory may possibly be needed on Saturday as well. Relief from the heat appears to come this weekend as a cold front reaches the Gulf coast.

Overview:

Highs today will range from the mid to upper 90s.  In combination with high afternoon humidity values, peak heat index values of 105 to 112F are expected.

A reminder to frequently hydrate, wear light clothing, limit outdoor exposure during the heat of the day, know the signs and symptoms of heat related illnesses and seek medical attention if needed, and vulnerable populations are at higher risk for impacts from the heat.

There is a Major Heat Risk for much of the region today.  A Major Heat Risk means that the heat is dangerous to anyone who does not have proper hydration or adequate cooling with little to no nighttime relief.  For more information on Heat Risk, including the forecast Heat Risk and what the risk levels mean, visit https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/heatrisk/.

There is also a MARGINAL RISK (level 1 of 4) for excessive rainfall today for areas of SE Alabama and SW Georgia from Geneva, AL through Tifton, GA. Heavy rainfall from slow moving and training storms can lead to localized flash flooding.

INTO THIS WEEKEND

A cold front marches towards the Gulf coast and is forecast to stall out into next week bringing showers and thunderstorms. The SPC has highlighted areas along and north of I-10 in a MARGINAL RISK (level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms on Saturday. The main impact will be strong to damaging wind gusts. Periods of heavy rainfall are possible and WPC has outlooked southwest Georgia in a SLIGHT RISK (Level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall Saturday and the rest of the area in a MARGINAL RISK (Level 1 of 4). On Sunday, the entire area is outlooked in a MARGINAL RISK for excessive rainfall. Over the weekend, rainfall totals of 1-3 inches is expected with isolated higher amounts up to 5 inches, especially in the slight risk area of southwest Georgia. Additional heavy rainfall is possible into next week as the cold front continues to meander in the area.
