On this date 33 years ago Hurricane Andrew made landfall in Louisiana/Acadiana as a Category 3 storm.
Andrew produced catastrophic wind damage in Iberia, St Mary and St Martin Parishes and decimated the Atchafalaya Swamp (does anyone remember the smell of dead fish after debris sucked all the oxygen out of the water days after?).
Highest local surface winds were in St Mary Parish where Berwick reported a gust to 124 mph, and Morgan City 107 mph. New Iberia reported a 90 mph wind gust while the highest official gust in Lafayette was 71 mph…West Baton Rouge Parish reported a gust to 96 mph.
With all the Louisiana hurricane anniversaries this week including Laura in 2020 tomorrow and Ida/Katrina 2021/2005 this Friday, it’s good to say the Atlantic tropics are relatively quiet with NO Gulf threats on the horizon for at least the next week to 10 days.
