Caution- Cold Weather is Coming- Protect Your Pipes & Backflow Preventers

Posted on November 6, 2025

With freezing temperatures expected next week, here are a few simple steps you can take now to help prevent damage and costly repairs:

1. Insulate Exposed Pipes

• Cover outdoor and exposed pipes with insulation or foam wrap.

• Don’t forget pipes in unheated areas like garages or crawl spaces.

2. Let Faucets Drip Overnight

• Allow a small, steady drip from faucets—especially the ones along exterior walls—to help prevent freezing.

3. Open Cabinet Doors

• Open cabinets under kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing.

4. Protect Outdoor Spigots

• Disconnect hoses and cover outdoor faucets with a protective cap or insulation.

5. Cover Your Backflow Preventer

• Wrap backflow preventers with insulation, towels, or foam, and cover with a plastic bag or weatherproof cover to keep moisture out.

6. Keep Your Heat On

• Maintain indoor temperatures of at least 55°F, even if you’ll be away from home.

A few minutes of preparation now can prevent expensive repairs later!
